SUSTAINABLE LIVING: 5 THINGS I PRACTICE

Sustainable living is not only a trend but our responsibility; it’s a mindful way of existing in harmony with nature. Over the years, I’ve embraced a lifestyle that aligns with my values of sustainability, simplicity, and appreciation for the natural world. Here are five things I practice in my everyday life to reduce my environmental impact and enhance my connection with nature.

1. Home in Harmony with Nature

The way we design and build our homes has a profound impact on the environment. I believe in using local materials that not only blend with the surroundings but also offer natural benefits. Adobe, for example, is an excellent material for home construction in appropriate climates due to its natural insulation properties, keeping interiors cool in summer and warm in winter without excessive energy use. Choosing materials native to the environment also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

Interior design plays a crucial role in sustainable living as well. I love to bring nature indoors, decorating my home with fresh flowers and herbs. These not only add beauty but also provide natural scents that eliminate the need for artificial fragrances. During my weekend getaways into the wilderness, I gather wildflowers, rosemary, lavender, and eucalyptus to refresh my space in an eco-friendly way.

2. Thoughtful Consumption

In a world driven by mass production and fast fashion, I choose to consume thoughtfully. Instead of impulsively buying trendy items, I seek out well-crafted, handmade, and locally sourced pieces. Locally sourced means the materials and labor come from nearby regions, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local artisans.

For clothing, I prioritize natural fabrics such as linen, organic cotton, and wool, which are biodegradable and more breathable than synthetic alternatives. In furniture, I prefer pieces made from reclaimed wood, rattan, or organic textiles, ensuring both durability and sustainability. This approach to consumption ensures that my wardrobe and home are filled with timeless, high-quality pieces that last for years rather than contributing to the cycle of waste.

3. Reusing Materials

One of my favorite aspects of sustainable living is finding beauty in nature’s discarded treasures. I collect objects like stones, shells, and bones, repurposing them as home decor or tools in my creative work. These elements carry history and raw beauty, reminding me of my adventures and the natural world’s gifts.

For example, large shells I’ve found along the Atlantic coast become beautiful jewelry dishes, while irregularly shaped stones serve as smudging tools for palo santo or sage. By reusing materials found in nature, I not only create unique, meaningful decor but also reduce waste and avoid the environmental toll of mass-produced items.

4. Commuting and Exploring on Foot

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to embrace sustainability. I make it a habit to walk instead of driving whenever possible, whether it’s to run errands, explore a new place, or simply immerse myself in nature. Walking reduces reliance on fossil fuels, promotes a healthier lifestyle, and offers a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

Exploring on foot allows me to engage with my surroundings in a more intimate way-observing the subtle shifts in seasons, discovering hidden paths, and feeling the textures of the earth beneath me. The slower pace encourages mindfulness and a greater connection to the present moment.

5. Solar and Natural Light Usage

I prioritize maximizing natural light in my living space, reducing the need for artificial lighting and energy consumption. Large windows, skylights, and strategically placed mirrors help bring in daylight, making my home feel bright and inviting.

In addition to utilizing natural light, I embrace solar energy whenever possible. Solar-powered lanterns, outdoor lighting, and energy-efficient design elements allow me to harness the sun’s power, lowering my dependence on conventional electricity sources. Embracing sunlight also supports my well-being, as natural light has been shown to improve mood and productivity.

Sustainable living isn’t about perfection - it’s about making conscious choices that align with our values and respect the planet. Whether it’s through thoughtful home design, mindful consumption, creative reuse, walking, or embracing natural light, these small practices add up to a more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle. By integrating nature into my daily life, I not only reduce my environmental impact but also cultivate a deeper sense of connection with the world around me.
